Exploring the Hacker Tent at Oktoberfest: A Unique Behind-the-Scenes Tour

The Hacker Tent, a beloved fixture at Oktoberfest, offers a unique opportunity for visitors to step away from the bustling festivities and delve into the intricacies of its operations. This year, 72-year-old Gerd Laumer, a multitalented individual and the tent's manager, is inviting guests on a guided tour that reveals the tent's hidden corners and secrets.

During the tour, you'll gain insights into the daily routine of the Hacker Tent. Gerd Laumer covers a distance of 16 to 22 kilometers daily within the tent during operations. You'll also get to see the staff staircase and secret passages, typically off-limits to Wiesn guests.

One of the highlights of the tour is a chat with a Wiesn waitress, offering a glimpse into the life of those who serve thousands of visitors each day. The tour also takes you to Sesam, a secret area named after the Ali Baba tale's treasure vault, which is accessible to only three people. Here, you'll find three enormous beer tanks filled by tank trucks.

The tour also includes a visit to the brewery gallery, a space reserved for invited guests of the brewery, and the Hacker Tent's floor plan, which is as large as Munich Cathedral. The beer from Sesam flows through a ring line to the individual tents.

The Hacker Tent is the only one on the Wiesn offering guided tours behind the scenes. The tours are available on weekdays at 11 am and 1 pm to avoid disturbing the busy weekend operations. Each tour group consists of 20 tourists among 500 employees and 7,000 festival-goers.

Book your spot on the tour at www.stadtvogel.de for 69 euros, which includes a table reservation for an hour and a 30-euro food and drink voucher.

Intriguing stories abound in the Hacker Tent. For instance, a painting inside the tent depicts the former mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, riding a bike. The story behind this painting involves a contact police officer and adds a touch of local history to the tour.

The Hacker Tent's security team is another aspect that deserves attention. Approximately 150 security personnel are on duty each day, with around five brawl interventions occurring daily. Despite these challenges, the Hacker Tent continues to provide a memorable Oktoberfest experience for thousands of visitors each year.
