Georgia cracks down on unsafe construction with steep new fines

Georgia is set to enhance construction safety measures. The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development has proposed a draft law to standardize fines for various safety violations. The new rules aim to improve safety and regulate construction activities across the country.

The proposed law introduces significant increases in fines for different construction safety violations. Unauthorized construction, reconstruction, or demolition that alters building dimensions will incur the highest penalty, 25,000 GEL on state or municipal property, and 8,000 GEL on private property. If the dimensions remain unchanged, the fine is reduced to 4,000 GEL.

Abandoning a construction site in violation of rules will now attract a 10,000 GEL fine. Noncompliance with permitted conditions defined in construction documentation or regulations will result in a 20,000 GEL penalty. The most severe fine, 30,000 GEL, is reserved for violation of construction safety rules in general.

The draft law, if approved, will significantly increase the cost of construction safety violations in Georgia. The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development aims to improve safety standards and deter offenders with these stricter penalties.
