George Washington Parkway repairs start this week with lane closures ahead
Repairs on the George Washington Memorial Parkway will begin this week. The project covers two key stretches: one between Spout Run Parkway and I-395 in Arlington, and another between Reagan National Airport and First Street in Alexandria. Officials say the work will improve road conditions and prevent further damage.
The first phase of resurfacing starts between Spout Run Parkway and I-395. Crews aim to finish this section by early to mid-May. Afterward, work will shift to the area near Reagan National Airport and continue for about six weeks.
Lane closures will take place during the day, overnight, and on weekends. Milling and paving operations will require these restrictions. During morning rush hours, two southbound lanes and one northbound lane will remain open. In the evenings, the pattern reverses—two northbound lanes and one southbound lane will stay accessible. The National Park Service (NPS) may also close ramps at times. Drivers will receive advance notice before any ramp shutdowns. The entire project is expected to last until mid-June, depending on weather conditions.
The roadwork aims to smooth out rough surfaces and extend the pavement's lifespan. Commuters should prepare for temporary delays and follow posted detours. Updates on closures and progress will be shared as the project continues.
