George Simion, a populist, triumphs in the initial round of the Romanian presidential election.
In a surprising turn of events, Romania's repeat presidential election is shaping up to be a tight race according to exit polls from two major polling centers, CURS and Avangarde.
These polls, released post-voting booth closure at 21:00 local time (two hours behind Lisbon), show both top contenders, George Simion from the AUR party and Crin Antonescu, a pro-European candidate, locked in a neck-and-neck competition with 23% each.
By 20:00 local time, as per the Permanent Electoral Authority, 50.65% of voters had cast their ballots, including those abroad. This is slightly lower compared to the November vote, where 51.19% had exercised their right to vote at the same time.
Eleven candidates are vying for the presidency in this election, a repeat of the vote held on November 24, which was annulled by the Constitutional Court due to suspected Russian interference.
