Hey there! Let's dive into Tina Romero's directorial debut, Queens of the Dead. This fierce feature is set to crash the scene at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 7. Are you ready for a feast of the undead with a twist?
George Romero's daughter creates a zombie film with a gay theme, securing her father's endorsement.
Tina, daughter of horror maestro George A. Romero, is stepping up to the plate with this project. She recently opened up to Entertainment Weekly, speaking candidly about her old man's impact on her work. "I can't say I ain't his kid, and he didn't leave his mark on me," she admitted, nodding to her Pop's legend status. Expect some subtle Easter eggs to honor her dad's legacy throughout the film.
"The zombie ruckus is an Inferno of social criticism gold," she explained to the mag. Queens of the Dead ain't shy about tackling social issues within the queer community, following a wild night at a heavy-hitting drag show that gets twisted by the outbreak of the undead. Rumor has it, the concept was born from some heated online drama she witnessed during her days as a DJ.
The original promoter's manifesto questioning why the queer community devours itself struck a chord with Tina. "It hit me like a grasshopper to the melon," she revealed, "I thought, Man, this would be my entry into the zombie biz!" Katy O'Brien stars as the fictionalized promoter leading the film, with an extra special nod to Tom Cruise in the credits for letting her take time off from Mission: Impossible to bring the horror flick to life.
Tina's aim with Queens of the Dead is to spark some long-overdue representation for the genre with a mix of gay scream queens and her dad's signature flair for comedy and horror. George didn't live to see the final script, but he offered his blessing and advice during its development.
"He said, 'I dig it! Give 'er a go! Let 'er rip!' Unfortunately, I didn't have the script finished before he kicked the bucket, but at least I had his blessings," Tina shared with a heavy heart.
