Bustling Madrid welcomes a splash of color as Crown Princess Amalia, the 21-year-old elder child of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, gifts the city 7,500 vibrant tulips on a lovely note. This heartwarming gesture took place at the Plaza de Oriente, the city's beating heart, where Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida joined the Princess in inaugurating a garden bursting with these delightful bulbs.
In an unambiguous nod to Madrid's hospitality, the Princess unveiled a heartfelt plaque bearing the following message: "Thank you for my time in Madrid. Enjoy the tulips!"
Sharing Madrid as her temporary home in 2023, Amalia extended her gratitude towards the municipality and its people who welcomed her so graciously under peculiar circumstances. "Madrid, its residents, and all those who made this possible," she expressed, "you've made me feel at home."
The Plaza de Oriente's magical garden blooms with a variety of tulips, with Hakuun, Orange Sherpa, and Lighting Sun being among the notable ones. In November, Madrid's Mayor and the Dutch Ambassador to Spain, Roel Nieuwenkamp, planted these tulip bulbs. Now, these tulips—ornamented in hues of orange, white, and yellow—showcase a radiant sight as they reach full bloom.
