Soccer and Stadium Safety: GdP Suggests Tech Enhancements in Lower Saxony
In the wake of escalating on-field chaos and officiating disputes leading to violence in Lower Saxony's soccer matches, the police union, GdP, is lobbying for increased investment in video technology and training for security personnel to fortify stadium safety.
Spearheading the campaign, Kevin Komolka, the GdP state chairman, pointed out, "It's the club's responsibility to ensure the overall functioning of the stadium during events," rather than relying on the police's efforts. In a conversation with the "Braunschweiger-Zeitung", Komolka suggested curtailing ultra blocks or imposing alcohol bans as feasible solutions.
On November 6th, during the Lower Saxony derby featuring Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig, a police officer sustained severe injuries from a scuffle in the home stand. Moreover, over 2,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order; causing Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) to schedule a meeting with the clubs' representatives, with a focus on tackling soccer violence.
