GCC and Iraq finalize landmark electricity link to unite regional grids
The GCC Interconnection Authority has moved closer to launching a major electricity link with Iraq. Recent talks with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity focused on finalising preparations for the project’s official start. The initiative aims to boost power supply reliability across the region by connecting Iraq with all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.
The project involves Iraq and the GCC countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. Key infrastructure is already in place, with stations built at Al-Faw in Iraq, Shuweihat in the UAE, and Al-Qurain in Kuwait.
Once operational, the GCC-Iraq interconnection will enable cross-border electricity trade between the seven nations. The project’s completion marks a step toward greater energy cooperation in the region. Officials have now set the stage for the system’s official activation.
