GC: Rumors of a coaching change involving Gerald Scheiblehner
Sturm Graz is searching for a new head coach following Jürgen Säumel’s exit. The Austrian club has again turned its attention to Gerald Scheiblehner, currently managing Grasshopper Club Zürich. Talks have also taken place with Maximilian Senft of Rapid Vienna for the same role.
Scheiblehner was first approached by Sturm Graz in summer 2024, before Christian Ilzer left for Hoffenheim. Instead of joining then, he took charge at Grasshopper in July 2025. His contract with the Swiss side runs until 2027, meaning any move would require a compensation payment.
At Grasshopper, Scheiblehner has maintained a strong record, averaging 1.18 points per game. His earlier success in Austria includes guiding Blau-Weiß Linz to promotion and a spot in the championship playoff group. Sturm Graz had previously considered him last summer, but he opted for Zürich instead. Now, with Säumel gone, the club is revisiting the possibility of bringing him in as their next manager.
Scheiblehner remains a leading candidate, though Sturm Graz has other options under review. His experience in Austrian football and recent performance in Switzerland make him a strong contender. The club must now decide whether to negotiate a deal or pursue an alternative.
