GBA Assumes Lead in Probe Regarding Attempted Homicide in Essen
In a significant development, the investigation against Kosovar national Erjon S. has been taken over by the Federal Prosecutor's Office from the Public Prosecutor's Office in Essen. The case, due to its special significance, is being conducted by the Police Presidium in Essen and the investigations are currently taking place in Karlsruhe.
On September 5, 2025, Erjon S. allegedly stabbed a teacher at a vocational college in Essen several times in the abdomen with a large knife. The victim, who is personally known to Erjon S., survived but suffered serious injuries.
The investigation was initiated on September 12, 2025. Erjon S. is also accused of causing dangerous bodily harm in two cases and is suspected in two attempts to kill a person out of low motives and in a cunning manner, as stated in sections 1, 3 JGG, 211 Abs. 2 StGB, 223 Abs. 1, and 224 Abs. 1 Nr. 2 and 5 StGB.
Erjon S. is believed to have acted out of an Islamist-jihadist ideology and his actions are capable of impairing the internal security of the Federal Republic (§ 120 Abs. 2 S. 1 Nr. 3 GVG). The suspect is said to have planned to join the jihad against supposed unbelievers and seek martyrdom from September 3, 2025.
During his arrest, Erjon S. sustained injuries and is currently in custody. In the course of his search for further victims, Erjon S. went twice to the Old Synagogue in Essen but did not find suitable persons.
The name of the Senior Public Prosecutor at the Federal Prosecutor's Office (Bundesanwaltschaft) conducting the investigations against Erjon S. has not been disclosed.
