Gaza's Ongoing Blockade Causes Real-time Hunger Crisis - Insightful Talk with Dr. Ismail Al-Thawabta

In the embattled Gaza Strip, a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportions is unfolding. The United Nations has issued a stark warning that all children under five are at risk due to the rising diseases caused by the current famine[1].

The crisis has left many residents, including the speaker, struggling to make ends meet. They and their family members have lost significant amounts of weight due to the scarcity of food[2]. The famine, primarily developed due to a full blockade imposed by Israel in March 2025[3], has severely restricted food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid.

Acute malnutrition, infections, and communicable diseases are on the rise due to the lack of treatment and blocked crossings in Gaza[4]. About 70% of the infrastructure has been destroyed, worsening living conditions and access to necessities[3]. The ongoing war, displacement, and deterioration of healthcare have compounded the crisis, with at least 132,000 children under five projected to suffer acute malnutrition in 2025 alone[1].

The blockade, combined with the destruction of infrastructure and a controversial aid distribution system controlled by Israel, has caused further hardship and deadly violence around aid centers[4]. The system significantly limits access and availability of aid, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations view the blockade and resulting starvation as a deliberate policy of starvation against the Palestinian population. This is considered a violation of international humanitarian law, especially the prohibition of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare under the Fourth Geneva Convention[2].

The deliberate starvation of civilians also violates the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, where deliberate starvation can constitute a war crime and, in this case, is described as part of an ongoing genocide against Palestinians[2]. Calls from the UN and humanitarian experts emphasize that starvation as a weapon of war is illegal and amounts to a crime against humanity[1][2][3][5].

Resentment is growing against governments that supply Israel with weapons while preaching morality. At least 1,838 people have been killed and over 13,409 injured while trying to access food, with investigations showing repeated Israeli gunfire at hungry crowds[6]. The world is aware of the situation in Gaza but is accused of avoiding responsibility and complicity by not taking action.

Even President Trump has intervened, expressing anger at Netanyahu over the starvation in Gaza. Today's meal in Gaza consists of only lentil soup, and this week's diet is limited to a quarter-portion of rice per person per day with water[7]. The hardest moment for the speaker is when their children ask for food but they cannot provide it.
