Gaza hospitals are teetering on the verge of collapse, according to the head of the World Health Organization.
In a significant move, Spain has announced that it will probe alleged human rights violations in the Gaza Strip to assist the International Criminal Court (ICC). This decision marks another step in Spain's efforts to lead international action over the conflict in Gaza.
The investigation will be conducted by the Office of the Spanish Attorney General (Generalstaatsanwalt Spaniens), involving the National Court (Nationaler Gerichtshof) and the Special Prosecutor's Office for International Cooperation (Sonderstaatsanwaltschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit). Spain's top prosecutor, Alvaro Garcia Ortiz, has issued a decree to create an investigative team to gather evidence of violations of international human rights law in Gaza.
The team will collect any evidence, direct or indirect, that can be gathered in Spain on crimes committed in Gaza for potential use in the ICC case. This move comes as hospitals in Gaza City are overwhelmed due to escalating violence, which is blocking access and preventing the World Health Organization from delivering lifesaving supplies.
The World Health Organization chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that Israel's ground offensive in northern Gaza has left hospitals 'on the brink of collapse.' More than 60 people were killed by Israeli fire on Wednesday, according to Gaza's civil defense agency. Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City has received the bodies of 20 people killed in Israeli strikes since midnight.
Spain's announcement comes amidst growing international criticism of the Israeli offensive in the Palestinian territory. Spain is a virulent critic of the Israeli offensive and has joined a case before the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
The ICC has already sought arrest warrants for top Israeli officials over alleged war crimes. Recently, the ICC has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel's campaign in Gaza. A Spanish police report records acts that could constitute crimes against the international community, allegedly perpetrated by the Israeli army in Gaza.
This investigation by Spain is a crucial step in the pursuit of justice for the people of Gaza and a significant contribution to the international community's efforts to uphold human rights and international law.
