Gaza distribution center breached following Hamas enforced blockade

Gaza Aid Distribution Center Stormed Amid Hunger and Tension

In the Gaza Strip on May 27, 2025, a humanitarian aid distribution center run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Rafah, a city in southern Palestine, was stormed by thousands of desperate people.

Operations at the center began amidst chaos and tension, with large crowds rushing to receive aid due to widespread hunger and deprivation among the local population. The GHF has taken over humanitarian aid distribution from previous agencies such as UNRWA, causing tension and unrest at the aid sites.

According to a reporter at the scene, the GHF staff had to retreat to ensure the safety of a small number of residents receiving aid. The Palestinian rescue forces later reported three fatalities and several injuries due to Israeli army fire near the Rafah center. Israeli military authorities stated they were investigating the matter.

The GHF accused Hamas-imposed restrictions of causing multi-hour delays at the center. Hamas described the situation as "tragic and painful" with "thousands of hungry people."

On a separate note, Jake Wood, the managing director of GHF, stepped down from his position on Sunday due to the organization’s inability to fulfill its mission according to "humanitarian principles."

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists, with ongoing starvation and deprivation leading to desperation among the population. As the implications of the aid distribution model shift and the conditions on the ground unfold, international attention continues to focus on the situation.
