The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine continues to escalate, with both sides showing no signs of backing down. The European Commission has proposed suspending free-trade arrangements for Israeli goods due to the war, but it lacks sufficient support among bloc members to pass.

On Wednesday, at least 30 people were killed across the Gaza Strip in Israel's latest strikes. The Israeli military announced the opening of an additional 48-hour route for Palestinians to leave Gaza City, but many are reluctant to do so due to fears of dangers along the way, dire conditions, lack of food in the southern area, and fear of permanent displacement.

A growing majority of EU states support the EU proposals for sanctions against two extremist Israeli ministers, violent settlers, and Hamas members. However, due to the lack of approval from large countries like Germany and France, a qualified majority is difficult to reach. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas proposed a package of sanctions targeting these individuals and groups.

Netanyahu has stated that Israel will strike Hamas 'wherever they are,' and the Israeli military's operations are focused on getting civilians to head south and intensifying fighting over the next month or two. The Israeli military expects around 100,000 civilians to remain in Gaza City, which could take months to capture.

The prospects of a ceasefire appear remote after Israel attacked Hamas' political leaders in Doha last week, infuriating Qatar, a co-mediator in ceasefire talks. The operation could be suspended if a ceasefire is reached with the Hamas militant group. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated there is a 'very short window of time' for a potential ceasefire.

The U.S. has criticized the attack on Israel, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio potentially referring to Israel's statements about stopping Hamas by force. Netanyahu stated that the EU sanctions 'won't have much effect.'

Amidst the chaos, there are stories of everyday people like Ahmed, a school teacher, who are reluctant to leave Gaza City. Ahmed expressed concerns about guarantees for return and the uncertainty of the war ending.

The diplomatic response within the European Union continues to evolve regarding the ongoing conflict. As the situation remains tense, the hope for a peaceful resolution remains elusive.
