Federal President Steinmeier Kicks Off International Sail Festival in Bremerhaven
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier opened the international sailing event "Großseglertreffen Sail" in Bremerhaven, Germany. The five-day festival, which transforms the city into a global center for tall ship enthusiasts, is expected to attract around 1.2 million visitors and feature over 250 ships from around the world.
The event, now in its third edition, is significant due to its promotion of international friendship and unity. Steinmeier emphasized that the international sailors' gathering is a significant message in times of growing worldwide crises and conflicts. He used the occasion to send a message of peace and unity, praising the event for promoting peaceful and friendly encounters.
Steinmeier sailed on the Gorch Fock, a German Navy training ship, during the event. He sailed towards the opening parade of approximately 100 ships, the sound of the ship's horn marking the start of the festival. His speech at the event highlighted the importance of international cooperation.
The festival not only showcases impressive historic sailing vessels but also promotes cultural exchange and maritime education. Institutions like the Alfred Wegener Institute participate in related science and outreach activities during the festival. The event ties Bremerhaven’s maritime heritage to modern international tall ship festivals, reinforcing Bremerhaven’s status as an important port and sailing hub.
In addition to the sailing events, the festival features harbour tours, street food, maritime parties, and interactive exhibits, attracting thousands of visitors and sailing crews. The city becomes a vibrant focal point where historic maritime tradition meets global sailing culture.
Steinmeier, who has taken the patronage of the "Sail" event, departed with the phrase "Well horned". He expressed gratitude for the event, especially in the context of global crises and conflicts. Steinmeier also mentioned that Russia is violating international law in the heart of Europe, but the event provides a reminder that there are still places where people can come together in peace and unity.
