Gathering of Far-Right Leaders in France: A Look at the Politics of Marine Le Pen

Head over to the exotic town of Mormant-sur-Vernisson, south of Paris, and you'll find a storm brewing. The hotbed of controversy? A meeting of far-right and anti-immigrant politicians that Marine Le Pen, leader of the Rassemblement National, a.k.a. National Rally, so graciously invited.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for his disparaging opinions on immigration, weighed in during the gathering. Orban, a firm believer in the "organized population exchange" ideology, feels it's a ploy to alter the fundamental cultural basis of Europe. He boasts about his adamant stance on keeping migrants out, even against Brussels' resistance[1]. He added a chilling statement: "We won't let our cities burn, our women be raped, and our people be murdered."

The gathering marked a year since the European elections that crowned Le Pen's National Rally as the most powerful force in France. Blue-blooded Republicans of far-right leanings like Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini of the League party, Santiago Abascal, head of Spain's extreme-right Vox party, and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis were present[1]. All of them associates of the Europe of Nations and Freedom group in the EU Parliament.

Salvini at the event, known for his fiery speeches, accused Brussels of secretly funding and organizing an alleged Islamic invasion of illegal immigrants[1]. He called on European "patriots" to band together to reclaim control of their continent's destiny and future. The meeting, scheduled less than two years before the next French presidential election, has fueled speculation about Le Pen's possible run[2]. However, just a couple of months ago, Le Pen was sentenced to four years in prison and a five-year ban on holding public office for embezzling European Parliament funds[1][3].

While her prison term is currently suspended as she appeals the verdict, the ban on office-holding immediately took effect[1]. This means, unfortunately for Le Pen and her faithful supporters, she's unable to vie for any further offices, including the 2027 French presidential election[1]. Le Pen has vowed to exhaust all legal means to contest her current status and aim for her longed-for presidential campaign[2][3].
