Gathering of bishops and specialists from throughout the Americas discusses migrant issues
The 12th Regional Meeting of Bishops and Pastoral Workers of Human Mobility is currently underway in Costa Rica, running from August 18-22. This significant gathering, being held at the Juan XXIII Social School in Dulce Nombre de la Unión, brings together representatives from various Bishops' Conferences, ecclesiastical institutions, experts, and delegates.
The focus of this meeting is the pressing issue of migration, an important concern for the Church. The Observatory for Human Mobility in Central America and the Caribbean (OSMECA), established five years ago, is participating in the event. OSMECA's mission is to develop stronger initiatives from local churches towards migration flows in the region.
During the meeting, Bishop Blanco and other attendees will discuss and propose ways to address the new migratory context in the region. The aim is to share experiences, hear testimonies, and propose solutions, all in light of the Word of God and the Church's social doctrine.
The gathering also invites the church community to come together in prayer. Decisions and actions are asked to convey the love of God and make them more sensitive to the suffering of their brothers and sisters, particularly those forced to leave their homes due to migration.
The meeting spans the Americas, with nations like Canada, the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, and Panama invited to share their experiences. The discussion revolves around a pastoral letter published by the Episcopal Secretariat of Central America (SEDAC) last fall, titled "He saw him, he approached him, and he cared for him."
Cardinal Fabio Baggio and Cardinal Álvaro Ramazzini are scheduled to attend the meeting. The meeting aims to be a platform for collaboration and support, as the community works to accompany and support those affected by migration. OSMECA is dedicated to sharing information, work, and solutions to help more people navigate this challenging context.
