Gathering at 'Together For Palestine' featured Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Richard Gere, Florence Pugh, and others, recounting the event's highlights
In a powerful display of solidarity, a diverse group of artists and cultural figures gathered at London's OVO Arena Wembley on September 17, 2022, for a special event titled "Together For Palestine". The evening, which raised approximately £1.5 million for the 'Together For Palestine Fund', saw performances, speeches, and collaborations aimed at raising awareness and funds for the Palestinian cause.
Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos and photographer Misan Harriman, along with musicians like PinkPantheress, Rachel Chinouriri, and Cat Burns, shared their commitment to the Palestinian cause. The evening's lineup was a testament to the power of art and the responsibility artists have to use their platforms for advocacy.
The event, hosted by Eric Cantona, Richard Gere, Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh, and Nicola Coughlan, featured a variety of performances. Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, Cat Burns, Rachel Chinouriri, Yasiin Bey, Bastille's Dan Smith, Jamie xx, Sama' Abdulhadi, Hot Chip, Ibibio Sound Machine, Trans Voices, Faraj Suleiman, Obongjayar, Nai Barghouti, James Blake, Paloma Faith, and a duet between Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns all took to the stage.
Brian Eno, Paul Weller, Damon Albarn, Adnan Joubran, Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor, and Nadine Shah performed a specially composed piece of music for the event. Albarn later returned to the stage for an impassioned medley of Palestinian traditional songs and a collaboration with Yasiin Bey and Omar Souleyman.
Florence Pugh and Rachel Chinouriri and Cat Burns delivered moving performances, while Eric Cantona called for action from the sporting world regarding Israel's participation in events. Nicola Coughlan encouraged other artists to speak up about Palestine, and Jameela Jamil, Louis Theroux, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Rina Sawayama, Laura Whitmore, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock also voiced their support during the event.
The evening was not just a musical spectacle; it was also an opportunity for powerful speeches. Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, gave an impassioned speech about the suffering of Palestinians. Mehdi Hasan and Palestinian war reporter Yara Eid highlighted the 270 journalists who have been killed in Gaza.
The event was available as a livestream, allowing those who could not attend in person to participate and show their support. Another charity event for Palestine, 'Gig For Gaza', curated by Paul Weller, is scheduled to take place next month.
The "Together For Palestine" concert was a powerful reminder of the unifying power of art and the importance of speaking out against injustice. The evening served as a call to action for artists, spectators, and everyone who cares about human rights.
