Evacuation and Road Closure Due to Gas Odor - Gas Leak in Barnstorf: One Injured, Buildings Evacuated

An old sewer in Barnstorf, Diepholz district, caused a gas leak today, leading to the evacuation of a business and an adjacent residential building. One employee was lightly injured and treated at a hospital.

The incident began when a strong hydrogen sulfide odor was detected, prompting the Lower Saxony State Police to evacuate the affected areas. A section of a federal road was closed for about an hour and a half to ensure safety.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is now investigating the cause of the leak. It is believed to have originated from an old sewer in the area.

The gas leak in Barnstorf has been contained, and the evacuated buildings have been deemed safe for reoccupation. The investigation into the incident continues to ensure such occurrences are prevented in the future.
