Garo Leader Presents Demand for Garoland Statehood to Indian Government, Delivers Memorandum in Delhi
Garoland State Movement Demands Separate Homeland in Meghalaya and Assam
The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) recently submitted a memorandum to the Centre in the national capital, reiterating their demand for a separate state for the Garo tribal community. This long-standing demand dates back to 1895, when it was first led by Matgrik Sonaram R. Sangma during the British era.
The GSMC believes that the creation of Garoland is a constitutional right, essential for the cultural, political, and developmental aspirations of the matrilineal Garo community in Meghalaya and adjoining parts of Assam. The movement aims to protect the rights, culture, and identity of the Garos, who feel neglected in the current political, economic, and developmental landscape.
The GSMC delegation, led by Tony Balsam Ch Marak, Balkarin Ch. Marak, Chevibirth Koknal, Amresh Ch. Marak, and Jason Tekrang, submitted the memorandum under Article 3 of the Constitution, which allows Parliament to create new states. The memorandum highlighted several urgent local issues that require government attention, though details were not disclosed in the statement.
The GSMC has consistently advocated for peaceful dialogue and has engaged with national political actors to press for statehood and the formation of a Garo Autonomous Council (GAC). In August 2025, a GSMC delegation met with the BJP Tribal Morcha President in New Delhi to discuss these issues.
While the movement has gained attention, the actual creation of Garoland remains unresolved and uncertain. The GSMC emphasizes that the demand for Garoland reflects the community's aspiration for self-determination, identity, and equitable development. The call for statehood remains a persistent aspiration for the Garo people seeking formal recognition and administrative autonomy.
