From Train Delays to Smooth Rides: A Chicagoan's Dream for the Hudson Tunnel Project

The wait for hassle-free commutes between NYC and its commuter towns, like Hoboken and Jersey City, might soon be over! The Hudson Tunnel Project, a crucial collaboration between The Gateway Program, isn't just a dream come true for commuters, but also a significant job-creating machine for the region.

Labeled as the "most urgent infrastructure project in America," the $16 billion undertaking aims to streamline travel for the 200,000 daily commuters and generate 100,000 jobs in the process.

It's been a rough couple of years for commuters, with the short and nerve-wracking NJ Transit Strike and the current drama with the East River Tunnel repair for the LIRR neighbors. But look out for some relief with this ambitious project on the horizon!

So, What Exactly is the Hudson Tunnel Project?

The Hudson Tunnel Project is a venture from the Gateway Program, set to create nine miles of new passenger rail tracks between NYC and New Jersey, including a tw0-tube tunnel under the Hudson River. The project will also repair the existing 115-year-old tunnel.

When all's said and done, the new Hudson River Tunnel will have two tracks to connect NYC and New Jersey, thus keeping the Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT capacity in check.

The project focuses on the Northeast Corridor (NEC), a 457-mile-long line that runs across eight states. The nearly 10-mile stretch from Newark, New Jersey, to Penn Station in NYC is the busiest portion of the line, with 2,000 intercity and commuter trains and a whopping 800,000 daily passenger trips, according to the Gateway Program.

"Gateway is a project that has enormous consequences for the millions of riders who will benefit from it, and it will be a significant driver of economic growth for the entire New Jersey-New York region," said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole.

Let's Cut to the Chase: Is the Hudson Tunnel Project Real?

With groundbreaking in 2023, this project is deemed as 10 projects mashed into one. According to Steve Sigmund, GDC Chief of Public Outreach, five of the 10 projects under the Hudson Tunnel Project are already underway.

Taking Some Cash Out of the Pocket: Who's Paying for the Hudson Tunnel Project?

The federal government and the Hudson Tunnel Project's partners - New York, New Jersey, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) - are footing the bill for the project and are splitting the costs 70/30, according to a press release from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's office.
