Gandhi Statue Unveiled in Tallinn's Mustamäe District

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a gift from India to Estonia, has been quietly unveiled in Tallinn's Mustamäe district. The statue, created by Indian artist Ram Sutar and cast in bronze, was installed without much fanfare due to the cancellation of a visit by India's foreign minister.

The statue, a tribute to the leading figure in India's struggle for independence, was gifted to Estonia in connection with the 150th anniversary of Gandhi's birth in 1869. It was installed on a pedestal in a pine grove on the edge of Mustamae, previously used for a temporary art installation. However, Tallinn city artist Elin Kard feels the statue does not fit the pedestal's dimensions.

The unveiling was a low-key affair, with no high-ranking officials present. This was due to the cancellation of a visit by India's foreign minister S. Jaishankar, who was scheduled to attend. The statue had been in storage for several years, awaiting a suitable time for installation.

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi now stands in Mustamae, awaiting a more formal unveiling on a future visit by Indian officials. Despite the quiet installation, the statue serves as a symbol of the friendship between India and Estonia, and a reminder of Gandhi's significant role in India's independence.
