Game 1 setback for Thunder: Alex Caruso uncovers the actual perpetrator responsible for the disappointing loss against the Nuggets.
In a jaw-dropping turn of events at the end of Game 1 of the second-round series between the Denver Nuggets and the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nuggets snatched a 121-119 victory, shaking up the NBA Playoffs.
Many spectators lashed out at the Thunder's suspect strategy in the game's closing seconds. With a three-point lead and under ten seconds left, Alex Caruso strategically fouled Aaron Gordon in the backcourt – a questionable move given the Thunder were in the penalty and already ahead.
Gordon converted both free throws, shrinking the Thunder's advantage to a mere point. Later, Chet Holmgren missed both free throws, presenting an opportunity for the Nuggets to win the game with a last-second basket. The Nuggets capitalized with Gordon's clutch three-pointer.
While some pinned the loss on the Thunder's unorthodox strategy and Holmgren's missed free throws, Caruso believes that missteps in the minutes leading up to the dramatic finish spelled disaster for Oklahoma City.
“Caruso emphasizes that the five minutes prior to the final sequence were probably what cost them the game,” reported Joel Lorenzi of The Oklahoman.
Jalen Williams defended Holmgren from blame for the Thunder's Game 1 debacle, while Nikola Jokic paid a surprise visit to an OKC bar following the win. ESPN's Charles Barkley even speculated about Jokic's coaching potential after the Nuggets' triumph.
However, Caruso conceded that "We inadvertently gave them a few free throw opportunities that they didn't earn." Over the final six minutes, the Nuggets outscored the Thunder 21-11 while going 11-for-14 from the line. Meanwhile, the Thunder could only manage 2 successful free throws during that same stretch.
Addressing the Thunder's controversial decision to use their fouls late in the game, head coach Mark Daigneault admitted, "We'll continue to analyze the strategy and learn from it, but I don't think that's what cost us the game."
