In the bustling neon-lit casinos of Macau, a gripping psychological thriller unfolds. The film, titled "Ballad of a Small Player," stars Colin Farrell as Lord Doyle, a British gambler living under an assumed identity and struggling with mounting debts.
Directed by Edward Berger, the movie is an adaptation of Lawrence Osborne's 2014 novel of the same name. Berger, who has recently become one of the most in-demand directors in global cinema, has reteamed with several crew members from his previous film, "All Quiet on the Western Front."
The film, set for its festival run in the fall, is scheduled for a theatrical release in the US on October 15, followed by releases in the UK and Ireland on October 17. It will then be available to stream on Netflix globally from October 29.
In "Ballad of a Small Player," Doyle's life takes a turn when he meets Dao Ming, a mysterious casino employee played by Fala Chen, who may be his lifeline. Meanwhile, Tilda Swinton portrays Cynthia Blithe, a relentless private investigator determined to confront Doyle about his past.
Supporting roles are filled by Alex Jennings and Deanie Ip. Colin Farrell, with this film, has a busy year ahead, as it is one of several projects he is working on.
