Disney's latest live-action adaptation, Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, faced a challenging run at the box office due to political controversies surrounding Zegler and broader geopolitical tensions affecting Hollywood.

Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen in the film, recently shared her thoughts on the movie's reception during an interview with Israel's Keshet 12's The A Talks. She attributed the film's financial struggles partly to the "pressure" in Hollywood for celebrities to speak out against Israel amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, which she believes affected the film’s marketability and audience turnout.

Rachel Zegler, who portrays Snow White, has been at the centre of controversy. Her critical comments about the original Snow White story and her public support for Palestine sparked backlash among traditional Disney fans and political groups, further fuelled by her disparaging remarks about former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Zegler's comments at the D23 Expo also resurfaced online and were not well received. Despite this, her interpretation of Snow White added more layers to the character, offering a fresh take on the classic tale.

The film, which had a reported budget of $270-350 million, failed to recoup costs, earning under $100 million domestically and around $205 million worldwide. This is significantly less than other Disney live-action remakes.

The film's underwhelming opening weekend performance, about $42.2 million, lagged behind previous Disney remakes, suggesting possible weakened audience interest. However, the film trended high on Disney+ after its release, indicating a strong streaming audience.

Although Gadot denied any personal tension with Zegler, the controversies surrounding Zegler’s social media and political statements became a liability for Disney, reportedly leading the studio to monitor her posts closely.

The political and social media controversies, combined with the broader polarized geopolitical climate, appear to have negatively impacted the film's reception. In summary, the poor box office results stemmed from a combination of backlash against Rachel Zegler’s political and social media statements, the broader polarized geopolitical climate influencing Hollywood’s reception, and relatively weak audience turnout compared to Disney’s past live-action remakes.
