Gahr secures victory over former league champions in baseball match, thanks to Irwin's stellar two-hit shutout performance

In a historic moment for Gahr High's baseball programme, senior pitcher Noah Irwin led the team to a 2-0 victory over La Mirada High on April 22, 2025, marking the school's first shutout win over La Mirada since 1988.

The game, played on La Mirada's field, was a significant milestone for Gahr, ending a long-standing streak and demonstrating a strong pitching performance by Irwin. This victory was particularly sweet as it came against a formidable opponent, with La Mirada boasting a 19-6 record and a 10-2 league standing.

Prior to this win, Gahr had finished two games behind La Mirada in each of the first two seasons of the Gateway League. However, the team's fortunes seemed to change in the recent encounter, with Gahr taking two of three from La Mirada last week.

The game was a tight one, with both teams displaying impressive defensive play. In the top of the third inning, Gahr's senior center fielder Taison Miller stole a base and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Irwin, who also pitched the final seven outs of a game against La Mirada on March 31, 2025, in a 2-0 win for Gahr, was in top form. He pitched a complete game, yielding only two hits and allowing eight runners to reach base.

The victory propelled Gahr to an 11-8 overall record and a 5-1 standing in the Gateway League. The team began this week with a three-game series against Warren High.

La Mirada, seeking its third straight Gateway League title and ninth league crown in a row, will look to bounce back against Arcadia High on May 6. The Gladiators will then play Bellflower on Tuesday and go to the home of the Buccaneers on Wednesday.

This shutout victory was the first time Gahr had shutout La Mirada since May 26, 2006, a 6-0 victory. It was also Irwin's first start of the season, making his performance all the more impressive.

Meanwhile, Jake Ourique, a junior at Gahr, had previously pitched a complete game shutout against La Jolla Country Day High on March 31, 2025. La Mirada had also recorded a win against West Ranch High 12-4 last Saturday and edged Bellflower High 2-1 in a makeup game this past Monday.

As the season progresses, Gahr will be aiming to build on this victory and secure a decisive win in at least five of its remaining six games to claim the programme's first league championship since 2010.
