Gahr Gladiators Secure San Gabriel Valley League Lead with Impressive Win
The Gahr High boys basketball team continued their impressive form in the San Gabriel Valley League, extending their winning streak to six games with a convincing 62-35 victory over Marquez High on January 27, 2024.
The game started in style for the Gladiators, as they scored the first seven points of the match and the first 11 points of the second quarter. Senior Ethan Carey led the team with a team-high 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one block, while senior Jaison Joyce contributed eight points and two rebounds in the first quarter.
Seven different players scored in the first half for Gahr, with seven of the 11 players who saw action scoring a basket. The team's impressive performance on the boards was also evident, as they collected 35 rebounds in the game, with all 11 players getting at least one rebound.
The win against Lynwood High on Wednesday night secured their first round of San Gabriel Valley League action at 5-0. However, the loss to Lynwood High earlier in the season, by a margin of two points, means that the Gladiators need to win at least three of their remaining four games to secure a place in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.
Coach Marcus Girley emphasised the importance of winning these upcoming games, stating, "We need to win at least three of those four games to make the CIF-Southern Section playoffs." The Gladiators' remaining games of the regular season are against La Mirada High on Monday, Domingues High on Wednesday, and Lynwood High again on Friday.
An at-large berth for the Gahr High boys basketball team would be tough if they don't finish in the top three of the league. However, with their current form and the tough games they have ahead, the Gladiators will be looking to finish the regular season strongly and secure a place in the playoffs.
