Gahr Boys' Basketball Dominates Cerritos, Wins Fourth Straight Victory Against City Counterparts Without Ever Falling Behind
In a thrilling display of basketball, Gahr High School's boys basketball team emerged victorious against their city rivals, Cerritos High School, with a score of 63-39 at The Classic at Damien tournament. This marks Gahr's third consecutive win in the city rivalry.
Hosted by Damien High School since 1981, The Classic at Damien is a tournament that Gahr High School's boys basketball team will stay in the Southland to participate in. The tournament presents no easy games, as stated by Gahr's coach, Girley.
Leading the charge for Gahr was sophomore Joshua Pearson with 18 points, while freshman Xavier Brown contributed 12 points, scoring a pair of three-pointers each in both quarters of the first half. Senior Uchenna Okoli added 11 points to the team's total.
The game started with a bang, as senior Ethan Carey drained a three-pointer 52 seconds into the game, giving Gahr an early lead. Cerritos did not score until nearly two minutes into the game. Gahr began to pull away after a 9-0 run that covered the final 3:31 of the opening quarter.
The game was dominated by Gahr, with a 33-point lead by the midway point of the third quarter. In the second quarter, Gahr outscored Cerritos 10-0 over a span of 2:16 to put the game away.
Despite the lopsided score, Cerritos was true on seven field goals in the first half, with three coming on perimeter shots and another coming on a three-point play.
Gahr's largest win in the past 26 seasons, including tournament games, remains their 39-point win in a Dec. 6, 2014 tournament game.
Coach Girley emphasised the importance of team bonding during their five-day stay in San Diego for the tournament. Gahr High School's boys basketball team will face Valencia High in the opening game of the Silver Division at San Dimas High on Thursday afternoon.
While the detailed history and streak details of the boys basketball rivalry between Cerritos High and Gahr High since 1999 remain undocumented, the win would be the second longest winning streak for Gahr since 1999 if they manage to win their next game. The team's coach, Watanabe, expressed confidence in their ability to handle competition and big games. The team is a tightknit group of seniors, juniors, and sophomores, but needs to become more cohesive as a whole according to Watanabe.
