Gaël Monfils Retiring After 21-Year Tennis Career

French tennis star Gaël Monfils is retiring from professional tennis after a 21-year career. Known for his acrobatic style and competitive spirit, Monfils has announced his decision to step away from the sport following a farewell tour in 2026.

Born to Rufin Monfils and Sylvette Cartesse, who immigrated to France from Guadeloupe and Martinique respectively, Monfils grew up in north-eastern Paris with a brother and two sisters. He played his first junior match in January 2002 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the junior world number one in 2004.

Turning professional in 2004, Monfils entered an era dominated by the 'Big Four' - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. Despite the tough competition, Monfils carved out a successful career for himself, winning 13 titles from 35 finals. He reached a career-high ranking of 6th in 2016 and is currently ranked 53rd in the world.

Throughout his career, Monfils has played against many top professionals, including legends of the golden era. He has no regrets about his career and considers himself lucky. As he looks towards his farewell tour in 2026, Monfils is at peace with his decision to retire, leaving behind a legacy of determination and skill on the tennis court.
