Gachagua speaks out against Raila's alleged relation claims and leadership approach
In a recent speech to Kenyans living in Southern California, USA, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua voiced his concerns about the current state of Kenyan politics. Gachagua, who is known for his ethnic-centric political stance, is currently leading the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and poses a significant challenge to President William Ruto's administration.
Gachagua's speech focused on the need for his government to correct the wrongs created by Ruto's administration. He did not specify any particular wrongs but emphasized the need for a change in leadership that takes responsibility. The former deputy president also criticized Raila Odinga, accusing him of creating problems and seeking to be in the Government of the day without taking responsibility.
Gachagua claimed that Raila has been using various ethnic groups, including Mulembe, Kamba, Kisii, Mijikenda, and Taita, for his political gains. He also stated that Raila has not reconciled with the fact that a section of his supporters have left him. However, Gachagua did not mention any new ethnic groups that Raila has been using for political gains in this speech.
Gachagua urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure additional polling stations for Kenyans living abroad in the next election. He also criticized the current administration for turning against its own people, particularly the young ones.
In a separate issue, Gachagua claimed that Ruto's administration threw out the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and replaced it with the Social Health Authority at a cost of Sh104 billion. He accused the administration of not working and of money being stolen.
Gachagua's comments were in response to Raila's rejection of the 'cousin' narrative, a common theme in Kenyan politics that suggests close ethnic or familial ties between leading politicians shape alliances or rivalries. However, the emphasis on tribal identity and Mount Kenya unity in Gachagua's speech may indirectly feed into or counter narratives like the "cousin" storyline.
In summary, Gachagua's speech to the Kenyan diaspora in Southern California was a call for change, criticism of the current administration, and accusations against Raila Odinga. His politics continue to be characterized by the mobilization of tribal identity rather than overt national unity rhetoric. The 2027 elections are expected to be a significant test of Gachagua's political influence and the future direction of Kenyan politics.
