Presidential Election 2022: Nominations Close, Candidates Emerge

The race for Ireland's presidency is heating up as nominations close on Wednesday next, with several candidates vying for the prestigious position.

Fianna Fáil's presidential candidate, Jim Gavin, has officially handed in his nomination papers. Meanwhile, Maria Steen is hoping to secure the necessary 20 nominations from Oireachtas members before the deadline. Michael Healy-Rae has signed nomination papers for Ms Steen in her bid to become a presidential nominee.

Minister Healy-Rae clarified that signing nomination papers does not indicate electoral support but ensures a fair and full choice for voters in the democratic process. He also stated that while he will be backing Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys, he wants to give Ms Steen the opportunity to contest the election.

Sinn Féin is yet to announce its decision on the Presidential Election. The party has been in a 'very lengthy consultation process' regarding its approach to the election. Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan contributed her views on whether the party should stand its own candidate or support someone else. According to Boylan, people will 'know tomorrow' Sinn Féin's position on the Presidential Election.

The Independent Ireland party will support a candidate if they receive the backing of 16 members of the Dáil or Seanad. Sinn Féin is considering two options for the Presidential Election: running its own candidate or backing Independent Catherine Connolly's campaign.

Mary Lou McDonald, a Sinn Féin leader, commented yesterday that Sinn Féin's participation in the Presidential Election campaign could be a 'game-changer'. Sinn Féin will announce its decision on the Presidential Election on Saturday.

It is worth noting that Jarlath Burns, the President of the GAA, will not be standing in the forthcoming Presidential Election.

Polling in the Presidential Election is scheduled for Friday 24 October, with a result expected around 9pm the following day. The election will take place on #Aras25.
