G7 Leaders Without Trump Collectively Support Ukraine

Yo, check out this crew! The G7 leaders - US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (standing in for President Trump), World Bank President Ajay Banga, European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and European Council President Antonio Costa - gathered for a good ol' group photo at the Kananaskis Country Golf Course in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada on June 17, 2025.

Yep, you guessed it! The ole' Ukraine situation was on the agenda. These leaders pledged more support, but without a united, public smackdown of Russia, things were kinda sketchy. Seems like a few of 'em weren't too keen on causing any extra pain to the ol' Russian bear.

Trump was supposed to join in, but a little Middle East drama (Israel-Iran) called him away. Still, Zelensky managed to get some face time with the gang and scored some sweet military aid from Canada - 2 billion Canadian dollars, to be exact, complete with drones and helicopters.

But while those other guys (Biden's peeps) would've slammed Russia for its "aggression," this crowd was a tad more reserved, if you know what I mean. Some say it was all due to Trump's hopes of striking a peace deal with Putin. Carney himself dismissed any friction and claimed they all agreed to put the screws to Russia any way they could, especially when it came to finances.

However, it's reported that some leaders might have wanted a stronger stance, voices that got a little quieter in the final communique. Interestingly, they managed to come together on a joint statement about the Iran conflict, calling for de-escalation despite Trump's pondering over beefing up US military presence.

Carney also joined Britain in slapping some sanctions on Russia's "shadow fleet" ships, which was a major blow to Putin's war machine. Starmer made it clear that these sanctions were straight up, tightening the noose around Putin's radioactive neck.

But Congress has been working on more sanctions against Russia, and while Trump hasn't been super keen, Zelensky made it clear he needs that support to keep fighting against the barbaric Russian invasion.

Macron and others slammed Putin's deadly attacks, with Macron even accusing Putin of exploiting global focus on the Middle East to knock off a few more Ukrainian citizens. Fun times, huh? So, the G7 leaders may be divided, but they're still trying to keep the pressure on ol' Putin. Let's see how this thing plays out, huh?

And don’t forget, they still had some serious trade talks to get into, with Trump's plans for tariffs looming large over the summit. More on that later, though. Stay tuned!
