Saving the "Creative Oasis": The "Viva la Bernie" Artists' Haven in Hamburg
For years, the future of the "Viva la Bernie" artists' and artisans' farm in Hamburg's Altona district was up in the air. But recent developments have brought about a positive resolution, thanks to a joint effort between the property's owners and tenants. The two private owners will buy the property from the Johann Daniel Lawaetz Foundation for 8.5 million euros, with the aim of leasing it out to the artist community on a long-term basis.
This news was shared by the involved parties in Hamburg on Monday. To make this happen, the artist community must secure a portion of the funds through private loans, generous donors, and benefactors.
Hamburg's Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Green Party) expressed her delight at this collaborative effort, emphasizing the importance of preserving this locale that inspires beyond local borders. "The Künstler- und Handwerkerhof is a vibrant hub for interactions, community, and creative expression," she said.
The artists' association representative, Ralf Gauger, shared their joy at the compromise reached. "While we're pleased with this outcome, our journey is far from over," he added.
Initially, the property was acquired by Berlin investors Christoph Reschke and Alexander Möll in 2017. Home to about 110 artisans and artists, this site boasts tenants like the hip-hop group Fettes Brot. Their fear of impending eviction due to rent hikes and the investors' aspirations to transform the property into a real-estate hotspot sparked a desire to claim ownership.
However, the artists and tenants' strong sentiments paved the way for constructive discussions, leading to a decision that preserves the farm as a thriving home for local artists and craftsmen.
These days, the "Viva la Bernie" artists' and artisans' farm is a bustling oasis, where art is born, and creativity flourishes. It serves as a vital space for interactions, demonstrating the power of community and collaboration in protecting and preserving artistic heritage.
