Tencent's Soaring HQ: A Futuristic Sprawl with a Twist
Prepare to be blown away! With a whopping 499,900 square meters, the brand-new Tencent headquarters, designed by Ole Scheeren's firm, is set to house over 23,000 employees when it opens in five years. Yep, that's almost twice the size of Apple's office in Cupertino, California! And the best part? The German architect shared exclusive renderings with CNN, revealing a mesmerizing spiral design with four towers sprouting from a central, open space, ingeniously dubbed the "Vortex Incubator."
Located smack-dab in the heart of Tencent's ambitious and almost car-free "future city," this architectural marvel will grace the skies of Shenzhen, China. Now, if you've heard of this tech gigantic, you're no stranger to the wonders of WeChat and QQ messaging services. But Tencent is stepping it up a notch and leading this visionary project.
Scheeren, who's no stranger to stunning architecture – he famously worked on the iconic CCTV Headquarters in Beijing – shared some exciting insights with CNN, revealing how the swirling geometry of this edifice will foster an ecological system. Work will be seamlessly integrated, and collaboration will blossom in this highly interactive environment.

Intrigued by Tencent's quest for design excellence, schemes decided on Scheeren's vision after a global design competition, making his firm the chosen architect for the most notable corporation in China.
The lower levels of this project, dubbed "Tencent Spiral," will connect multiple office buildings through a gigantic lobby and public facilities such as educational, entertainment, sports, and fitness spaces, including basketball courts, tennis courts, and badminton courts. Ingeniously located at the ground level, this structure will erase the concept of a front or back entrance, instead offering a blend of public and private spaces.
During the video call, Scheeren revealed that this structure will not have a front or back side, as it will change appearance based on the viewing angle.
The Town That Never Sleeps
Construction for this colossal community, earlier known as "Internet City," began in 2020. Spread across reclaimed land stretching to the mouth of the Pearl River, it will eventually house schools and public facilities, as well as becoming car-free. Connected to Shenzhen via ferries and the U-Bahn system, this zone of uninterrupted progress will still offer ease of access for employees via a bridge connecting parking lots and cargo stations.
Tencent headquarters will be just one of many buildings on this site, but already some constructions are underway with design frameworks for others still to be revealed.

To foster unity with the surroundings, Scheeren's spiraling pattern, inspired by galaxies and storm clouds, will branch out into a network of footpaths, connecting the nostalgic and the modern, preserving public spaces while reinforcing the relationship between the new campus and its backdrop.
Scheeren shares his excitement over this approach, explaining how he seamlessly integrated pedestrian networks and green spaces without majorly altering existing structures, thus unifying the larger project.
Rebooting XXI-Century Corporate Headquarters
A key focus in the project is integrating nature within the design, creating a bond with the exterior world while maintaining a functional workspace.
Planned with natural ventilation, this "Swamp City" project incorporates a water management design concept, preventing storm surges and floods and conserving water resources.
Distinguishing itself from sprawling US tech campuses, Scheeren calls the compact Tencent Helix structure a more urban feel, eschewing suburban design and promoting a more professional image for employees, steering clear of "playpen" workspaces.
"The office isn't just a cell anymore, but neither should it be a playground," he asserted.
While the exact date for Tencent Helix's grand opening is still under wraps, it's expected to debut in 2028, coinciding with Tencent's 30th anniversary and relinquishing the throne as the company's global headquarters to this fascinating architectural marvel.
