Germans Seek New "Youth Word of the Year"

Stuttgart-based publishing house Langenscheidt has launched its annual search for the most popular slang term among young people, aged 11 to 20. The publisher, known for its contributions to language and education, calls for submissions online until further notice.

Words in any language may qualify, providing they are part of young people's everyday vocabulary. Past entries in various languages have made it to the top 10 list.

Langenscheidt initiated the search for the "Youth Word of the Year" in 2008, producing a mix of humorous and peculiar winners over the years. The first winner was "rotten meat party," a term for parties popular among the under-30 demographic. Later entries such as "chill," "Niveaulimbo," "swag," "yolo," "babo," and "Smombie" graced the podium.

In 2021, the word "cringe" won, symbolizing awkward moments, while "aura" took the title in 2022, highlighting a person's charisma. This year, Langenscheidt invites young people to share their creative coined phrases for a chance to be named the "Youth Word of 2025."

Submissions can be made at jugendwort.de, with the top 10 revealed on July 29. Subsequent voting for favorites will follow, leading to the final presentation of the top three words on September 9. The announcement of the overall winner will be made on October 18 at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
