Greifswald Unveils New Future Council: "My Greifswald 2030 - What Moves Me?"
The city of Greifswald is set to launch a new Future Council this fall, with the aim of actively shaping the city's future. The council, with the motto "My Greifswald 2030 - What moves me?", is part of a broader initiative to explore new paths in citizen participation.
Jonas Dietrich, the project leader of the Future Council, has stated that the city is eager to hear from its residents. "We want to allow 60 Greifswald residents to contribute their perspectives, ideas, and wishes until 2028," he said.
The council will be staffed as representative and balanced as possible, considering factors such as age, gender, and place of residence in the districts. The city administration has invited approximately 2,000 randomly selected residents aged 16 and over to express their interest in participating. The selected participants will be chosen by lottery.
The Future Council will have a total of eleven meetings starting this fall, with the meetings focusing on developing topics important to citizens and creating concrete recommendations for the city council. The council's work will continue until 2028.
The Future Council is testing a lottery-based body as a potential new procedure for citizen participation. This innovative approach is funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the federal program "Democracy lives!".
The Future Council's recommendations will be presented publicly at the end of the process, with the city council taking a stance. The council's work is aimed at serving as a useful supplement to existing participation formats.
The Greifswald city council established a temporary Future Council at the end of March 2025. The new Future Council, set to begin this fall, is an extension of this initiative, with the goal of allowing more residents to have a say in the city's future.
Invitations for the Future Council will be delivered by the end of August 2025. If you are one of the selected residents, this could be your chance to make a difference in the city of Greifswald.
