In the backdrop of escalating strategic rivalries and underlying tensions in the Indo-Pacific region between the U.S. and China, Japan reinforces its military might on Yonaguni Island, the most westerly island of Okinawa. Such strengthening is reasonable, given the island's significant...

Fancy a geopolitical tangle? Let's talk about Mavulis Island and the Indo-Pacific's tense dance! This northernmost speck of the Philippines shares Yonaguni Island's strategic charm being close to Taiwan, stirring a zest for its own defense. You see, Mavulis is just a stone's throw away from Taiwan. Compared to Yonaguni's beefed-up Japanese base, the Philippines has been a bit slow on the uptake. That's a bummer when you consider Mavulis might be a linchpin in the defense of Taiwan.

Why all the fuss, you ask? It's a question of chokepoints, mate! The Bashi Channel connecting Mavulis and Taiwan's Orchid Island could be a primary route for China's navy to squeeze, blockade, and isolate Taiwan. In geek-speak, it's a potential chokepoint that could decide the outcome of a Taiwan conflict. Plus, it's a heaven for subs, said to be ideal for China's navy ops. So, Mavulis Island and the Bashi Channel are like the secret sauce in a recipe for Taiwan's defense.

We think the US would want Manila to seize the opportunity and boost Mavulis defense. Beefing up Mavulis could be a smart move to deter China's aggression in the region. The US and the Philippines could team up to make the island less appealing to a Chinese advance, limiting China's navy's movement in the Indo-Pacific.

Controlling key waterways, like the Bashi Channel, is important to protect Taiwan and ensure regional stability. If China pitches a tent in the Bashi Channel, it could encircle Taiwan, posing a big threat to peace and security. Any intervention to support Taiwan would require accessing the Bashi Channel, so securing it is critical.

To boost its maritime domain awareness, the Philippines can deploy advanced surveillance systems on Mavulis. Meanwhile, the US can lever their annual Balikatan exercise to enhance joint real-time monitoring of vessel movements and contribute to a comprehensive maritime domain awareness framework. The Philippines' inaugural Navy detachment on Mavulis in October 2023 marks a significant step in reinforcing Manila's northern defenses. More could be done, like conducting joint maritime key terrain security operations around Mavulis and establishing a forward operating base on the island to bolster defense.

The Bashi Channel sits within the first island chain, a significant perimeter for nations looking to counter China's maritime growth. Controlling the Bashi Channel lets you keep tabs on and potentially influence PLAN movements between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea, making it a focal point in the broader US strategy to isolate and deter China's aggressive posture.

Gray zone tactics, like using maritime militia and coast guard vessels to assert claims, are on the rise in the region. Multilateral security cooperation is essential to address these issues and maintain stability and cooperation between external powers. Forums like the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) help foster collective security through coordinated diplomatic efforts, intelligence sharing, and cooperative military exercises.

In summary, Mavulis Island is a piece of key terrain that packs a punch in shaping regional security. Like Yonaguni Island, it should be treated with due respect!

Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Lee, an Indo-Pacific expert, penned this piece. His views, however, don't necessarily reflect the viewpoint of the United States Military Academy, Department of the Army, or Department of Defense.
