Fürth's Women's Culture Museum fights to survive amid rising costs
Six Months After Relocation, Fürth's Women's Culture Museum Faces Financial Struggle
Half a year after moving to Fürth's city center, the Museum of Women's Culture is confronting financial challenges. To safeguard the future of this one-of-a-kind institution in Bavaria, the Green Party's state parliamentary group has now submitted a budget proposal for €15,000 in annual funding.
The Museum of Women's Culture Regional and International in Fürth is set to receive permanent state support starting in 2026, if the Green Party in the Bavarian State Parliament has its way. According to a recent budget motion, the lawmakers are calling for yearly funding at the specified level. The initiative was spearheaded by Barbara Fuchs, the Green Party's economic policy spokesperson.
The museum's supporting association, founded in 1989, has operated the institution since 2003. Until last year, its exhibitions were housed in the historic stables of Burgfarrnbach Castle. When the premises were sold to a private investor, the cultural institution was forced to relocate. In the summer of 2025, the museum moved into new exhibition spaces on Hirschenstraße in central Fürth. The more accessible location brings tangible benefits, including the ability to stay open year-round and forge closer ties with schools, universities, and other museums.
However, the move has also led to a significant increase in costs. According to the Green Party faction, fixed expenses—including rent, utilities, and insurance—have risen to around €30,000 per year. To date, the association's members have carried out nearly all the work on a voluntary basis. Donations and previous grants have not been enough to sustainably cover ongoing expenses, the motion's justification states.
MP Barbara Fuchs underscores the museum's historical and societal importance, noting that women have made decisive contributions to society for centuries. "These stories must be brought to light," she said. "The museum in Fürth provides a vibrant space that connects local history, education, and international networking." With state funding, she argues, this invaluable work could be secured for the long term.
The Fürth museum is the only women's museum in Bavaria, dedicated for over three decades to highlighting women's achievements and fostering intercultural exchange.
