Beyond Grünloh and Schröder's Adolescent Excellence
What a giant at just 19!
Johann Grünloh (19) from Rasta Vechta is causing a stir in the German Basketball League. The 2.10-meter center has played a significant role in his team's 4th place finish.
More than just talent: at the start of the year, Grünloh averaged an impressive 16.3 points and 13.0 rebounds in four games for Rasta's U18 team at the renowned "Next Generation Tournament" in Patras. He matched the record set by NBA star Victor Wembanyama (19/San Antonio Spurs) in 2020.
Super-skilled Grünloh: surpassing Dirk Nowitzki and Dennis Schröder's feats at 19!
►Nowitzki played in the 2nd division with his hometown team DJK Würzburg at 18, winning championships and earning the title of best shooter in the league. He made his debut in the league at 20 and went to the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks in 1999, winning a championship at 33.
►World champion captain Schröder (Toronto Raptors) averaged 2.6 points in 27 games for Braunschweig's first division team at 18. At 19, his average rose to 12.0 points in 14 games for Braunschweig before moving to the NBA in 2013.
► Grünloh averaged 8.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in seven Bundesliga appearances. In the summer, he won bronze with the German U18 team at the European Championships - Germany's first time ever winning a medal in this competition.
Nowitzki and Schröder didn't manage that. They never took part in the "Next Generation Tournament".

Armin Andres (64), Nowitzki's U23 national team coach and now DBB vice-president: "Johann Grünloh is a diamond in the rough, full of potential. He had a dominating role at the U18 European Championships this year, where we won bronze. His statistics for Vechta are also impressive. The club's environment is perfect for him because he gets plenty of playing time and responsibility there. He should stay for another year or two. Then we'll see where his journey takes him."
Potential NBA star, anyone?
Record-breaking national player Patrick Femerling (48), Nowitzki's former teammate: "With his size and athleticism, Grünloh can make it to the NBA. Anything is possible. He simply needs to keep his focus and stay level-headed."
Nowitzki and Schröder have already proven themselves in the NBA's elite league. Grünloh still has to do so.
- Grünloh's remarkable basketball performance has also caught the attention of Hamburg Sportlight, where he was featured as one of the young talents to follow.
- While Rasta Vechta is currently enjoying a 4th place finish in the BBL, the team's success is attributed to their young star, Johann Grünloh.
- If Grünloh maintains his current pace, he might even surpass the achievements of NBA legends like Dirk Nowitzki and Dennis Schröder at such an early age.
- Some basketball fans have even suggested Grünloh could be a candidate for top NBA teams, such as the Dallas Mavericks or Toronto Raptors.
- Unfortunately, the no-sports app has yet to cover Grünloh's meteoric rise, potentially missing out on highlighting one of German basketball's most promising young players.

- Grünloh's early basketball career bears some similarities to Dirk Nowitzki and Dennis Schröder's, but each player followed a unique development path. Nowitzki focused on skill development under unconventional training, while Schröder's rapid skill growth coupled with playmaking made him an NBA prospect.
