Dessau-Roßlau will host the 2035 Federal Horticultural Show (Buga) after residents backed the plan in a December 2024 referendum. The city’s bid has now taken a major step forward with the signing of a key shareholder agreement. Officials describe the event as a cornerstone for urban growth in the region.

The decision to bring Buga to Dessau-Roßlau follows strong public support. In a local vote last December, residents approved the city’s proposal to stage the 2035 show. The event’s slogan, A City Becomes BUGA, reflects its focus on transforming urban spaces through green development.

The project’s legal foundation was finalised this month. A shareholder agreement for the newly formed Buga Dessau-Roßlau 2035 nonprofit limited liability company (gGmbH) has been signed and notarised. With this step complete, the organising team can now begin planning in earnest. This will be the third time Sachsen-Anhalt has hosted the Federal Horticultural Show. Previous editions took place in Magdeburg’s Elbauenpark in 1999 and in Halle (Saale) in 1961. Lord Mayor Robert Reck has emphasised the show’s role in shaping Dessau-Roßlau’s future, calling it a vital part of the city’s long-term development strategy.

The 2035 Buga will mark Dessau-Roßlau’s first time hosting the event. Organisers will now move forward with detailed preparations, backed by a formalised company structure and public approval. The show is expected to bring significant changes to the city’s landscape and infrastructure over the next decade.
