E-Scooter Mishaps on the Rise in Bavaria's Streets
The number of traffic accidents involving e-scooters has seen a substantial surge in Bavaria this year. Compared to the same period in 2021, the tally of e-scooter-related accidents climbed by a staggering 12.3% to reach 1,216 by the end of October, as reported by Bavaria's Ministry of Interior in response to a query from the German Press Agency. The casualty count also spiked, marking an 11.7% increase. In total, 1,148 individuals were injured in these incidents, with 947 being e-scooter riders themselves.
Sadly, one fatality was reported in 2022. An e-scooter rider lost control and collided with a concrete wall situated within an underpass, riding alone at the time. The grim statistic of two fatalities in 2022 combined with the rising rate of accidents and injuries has raised concerns among officials and citizens alike.
Although the number of motorists involved in alcohol-related accidents with e-scooters dropped by 13% to 139 cases, the number of drug-impaired accidents spiked from 4 to 10 during the same period.
Encouragingly, the Bavarian Ministry of Interior anticipates a significant decrease in reported traffic offenses for 2023. However, a breakdown of the offenses committed by e-scooter riders was not supplied.
By the cutoff date of October, a total of 1,238 infractions have resulted in penalties for small electric vehicle drivers in Bavaria, primarily due to drinking and drug use (1,505 and 537 offenses, respectively).
