Fürth General Hospital overwhelmed by winter injury surge in 2026

Fürth General Hospital is facing an unprecedented surge in accident-related injuries this winter. Harsh weather and icy conditions have led to a sharp increase in patients, pushing trauma and emergency services to their limits. By late January, the trauma surgery department alone had already performed 70 operations.

The winter of 2026 has brought a wave of fall-related injuries across all age groups. Fractures, dislocations, ankle sprains, torn ligaments, and spinal trauma are among the most common cases. Sledding accidents and other winter sports mishaps have also contributed to the rise in recreational injuries.

Staff at Fürth Hospital are now working extended shifts, including nights and weekends, to clear the backlog of patients. Despite treacherous road conditions, the hospital has maintained full operational capacity without major staffing shortages. However, the high caseload has also put pressure on outpatient follow-up care, with clinics regionwide fully booked.

To ease the strain, local physiotherapy providers like Healthness Fitness & Physio GmbH have expanded their services. Additional treatment slots and evening appointments until 7 p.m. are now available to ensure patients receive timely rehabilitation.

Medical experts are urging residents to seek evaluation after falls and to participate in fall prevention training, particularly older adults. The hospital's trauma and emergency teams continue operating around the clock, but the demand for care remains high. With winter conditions persisting, healthcare services in Fürth are expected to stay under pressure in the coming weeks.
