Funkel's Second Chance: Guiding Köln Back to the Bundesliga
Initiative: Tap for Ascension - Funkel's objective: to lift hands high in an effort to ascend
Old-school coach Friedhelm Funkel, 71, is back at the helm of crisis-ridden 1. FC Köln, aiming to steer them back to the Bundesliga. It's like déjà vu for the promotion whiz, who's no stranger to saving the Geißbock from the abyss.
"Like coming home," Funkel grinned after jumping back into the fray following Gerhard Struber and Christian Keller's ouster post a disappointing draw against Jahn Regensburg. Over 500 die-hard fans showed appreciation for his comeback at the Geißbockheim before his first game against 1. FC Nürnberg (6:30 PM/Sky), on Friday night.
Funkel's promotional prowess includes six successful campaigns
With Köln teetering on the edge of the 2. Bundesliga four years ago, Funkel might only have to secure second place in the remaining two games to ensure a return to the Bundesliga. If successful, it'll mark his seventh promotion.
"The team is already in second place, so they've mostly achieved good results. That's what we've got to emphasize to them again," said Funkel, emphasizing his hands-on, trust-building approach with the players.
Critical analysis of past games is out of the question for Funkel. "Not a topic. The past doesn't interest me," he stated, wrapping up his plans.
Promotion still up for grabs
Though Köln's promotion looks promising, it's not a done deal yet. Relegation remains a risk, especially if the team doesn't step up their game against Nuremberg and Paderborn. In a twisted turn of events, Holstein Kiel, Funkel's old nemesis, could once again stand in Köln's way during the playoffs if they end up in third place.
Funkel's temporary tenure could become permanent if everything goes according to plan. The management's decision on future leadership, however, will depend on the team's performance and long-term strategic choices. Thomas Kessler has stepped in as the sporting director, but the long-term coaching position and sports directorship remain uncertain.
Meanwhile, the club will continue its search for a permanent head coach and sports director after the current season wraps up in September. While Funkel's name may not be in the mix, the future of the club will depend on the new leadership's strategies and the Geißböcke's performance.
