2. Bundesliga: Funkel's Crusade -Handson, Motivate, and Deliver

Operation Glow: Interaction and Ascension - Funkel's Initiative: Encouraging Action and Ascension Through Collective Uprising
When 1. FC Köln finds itself in a pickle, help frequently originates from a 70-kilometer journey north to Krefeld. Friedhelm Funkel, the promotion maestro, hasn't lost his knack as a coach, even in his advanced years. His strategy: hands-on, listen, spread positivity, and cultivate camaraderie. This 71-year-old has left quite the impression at Cologne's training facility.
"Coming home" is what Funkel expressed after taking the helm on Monday, embarking on his third stint with the FC since 2002. Over 500 fans welcomed the return of their trainer at the Geißbockheim before his first game on Friday evening against 1. FC Nürnberg (6:30 PM/Sky).
Funkel boasts an impressive record of six promotions so far
The mission is less complex and shorter than it was four years ago when Cologne's turbulent club was precariously close to the 2. Bundesliga. Following the surprising termination of trainer Gerhard Struber and sports director Christian Keller after the disappointing 1:1 draw against relegated Jahn Regensburg, Funkel merely needs to maintain second place in the remaining two games for 1. FC Köln to secure their return to the Bundesliga, potentially yielding Funkel's seventh promotion.
"The team is in second place, meaning they've predominantly delivered positive results," Funkel elucidated in his capacity as interim coach.
The seasoned coach on the sideline has a successful formula. He avoids dissecting past games critically. "That's not on the agenda," Funkel declared, having held numerous discussions with the players since the start of the week. "I believe a strong bond of trust has developed in the short time," observed the Cologne coach.
Relegation is still a possibility
Funkel remains optimistic about his mission. "I want to see straightforward, efficient football," the coach stated. Four years ago, he achieved relegation safety in six games and secured the club's survival in two further encounters against Holstein Kiel (0:1, 5:1). "That was harsh," the then 67-year-old later admitted.
This time around, the scenario may repeat itself. If the Cologne team finishes third, there will be two relegation matches against the Bundesliga's 16th-placed team. The opposition could again be Holstein Kiel. And even on the final matchday, Funkel might face a reminder of his past when playing against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He led the team to the DFB-Pokal final last year and previously kept the club in the 2. Bundesliga with the "Red Devils".
On an ideal scenario, promotion will be secured by the weekend
However, Funkel may only be needed for one game. If 1. FC Köln wins in Nuremberg on Friday, and the competition from Paderborn and the other team doesn't win on Saturday, 1. FC Köln will be promoted. Then, they might construct a commemorative statue of Funkel on the Jahnwiesen in the Müngersdorf sports park.
The abrupt dismissal of the club's leadership is a stark acknowledgement of bankruptcy. If Struber and Keller could no longer be trusted with the promotion, perhaps this realization could have come earlier.
The current board is only active until September, after which a new sporting director may be in office, and a new coach is certain. The list of candidates is extensive. Funkel's name is unlikely to be among them. Only if everything goes according to plan will the FC then also play in a new league.
