Feisty Nollywood Star, Funke Akindele, Sets Sights on More Politics
Funke Akindele Expresses Desire for Political Re-entry
Funke Akindele, the iconic actress and filmmaker, has declared her intentions to dive back into the world of politics, just over a year since her first political venture ended in a loss at the 2023 Lagos State governorship race.
This charismatic powerhouse was the running mate to Abdulazeez Adediran (Jandor), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the heated 2023 Lagos governorship battle. However, they were defeated by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Post-election, Akindele went quiet on the political front, deleting campaign-related content from her social media platforms, leading to speculations about her future political moves. But, spilling the beans during the inaugural live edition of the WithChude podcast, she made it clear that her political journey is far from over.
"I'm not here for the popularity, I want to support. I want to give back. That's why I went into politics" she boldly proclaimed.
Encountering the rough-and-tumble of politics, she found herself drawn to female politicians like Abike Dabiri, watching in admiration as they commanded respect and authority. She declared, "You too go, you can do it!"
Akindele shared that her political stint taught her some hard-earned lessons, chief among them being that fear will only hold you back. Armed with newfound courage, she noted that her time in politics broadened her understanding of governance and national issues.
She revealed, "When I want to speak, I speak with statistics and data," emphasizing that her political journey famed her with knowledge that she brings to the table today. When asked point-blank if she would take the plunge again, she responded enthusiastically, "Oh, yes."
Best known for her character in the hit television series Jenifa's Diary, this fiery powerhouse continues to be one of Nigeria's most influential entertainers. Her bold move into politics in 2022 created ripples, inspiring more youth and female participation in governance.
