Yacht Harbor Rebuild: Damp's Comeback after the Baltic Sea Tempest

Large-scale Funding (18 Million Euro) Arranged Post-Storm Surge in Baltic Region for Construction of Dams - Funds allocated amounting to EUR 18 million to manage aftermath of storm surge in the Baltic Sea

Catch a glimpse of Damp's resilience, mateys! The Baltic Sea storm of October 2023 washed ashore, leaving water levels over two meters higher than average and wreaking havoc on the charming yacht harbor in Damp, Germany. But don't let that deter ya! The town's grit and the state's backing promise a stormin' recovery.

Current Woes

The devastation isn't hard to miss. "At the moment, we've improvised with 110 emergency berths," says Mayor Barbara Feyock, as quoted by the German Press Agency. Before the tempest, they boasted a vibrant 365 berths. A sad 32 of those gleaming yachts now rest, not just beneath the waves, but on jetties too. Oi, the damage!

Recovery on the Horizon

Fear not, mateys, as the municipality has applied for aid in October 2024, and the State has agreed to cover around 75% of the reconstruction costs, amounting to 17.9 million euros. The total cost? A hefty 23.9 million euros. But hostess Feyock warns that the work can't kick off just yet, as European-wide tenders are necessary. She's hoping that work'll be wrapping up by the end of 2027.

Harbor's Future Glory

Economy and Tourism State Secretary Julia Carstens sees the record funding as just what Damp needs to regain and surpass its former glory. Quoting German Press Agency, she said, "We're not only rebuilding the existing North Mole and moving it, but we're also building a smaller mole on the south side." This addition promises increased charm and resistance against future storm surges, making the harbor a lure for tourists and revellers alike.

A Seaside Haven

Damp is known for its picture-perfect beauty as a holiday resort and a Baltic Sea health spa. Julia Carstens shares these sentiments, emphasizing the critical role the reconstruction plays in restoring its allure. "The almost 18 million euros in funding will help the municipality refresh this image," she adds.

What awaits, then? A revived harbor, ready for water sports, sunny vacations, coastal cycling, and hiking trails for the pleasure of all. And as the number of overnight stays at preventative and rehabilitation clinics continues its upward trend, this restorative haven promises to benefit many a weary soul.

Damp, brace yourself for a comeback! For the Baltic Sea, you're worth fightin' for.
