Chef Schuhbeck Freed on Bail - Fugitive Schuhbeck Remains at Large
The popular celebrity chef, Alfons Schuhbeck, who was handed a prison sentence of three years and two months for tax fraud, is currently on the loose.
A spokesperson from the Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office stated, "We're in the midst of reviewing whether and how to administer necessary medical treatment for Mr. Schuhbeck in prison. Until this review concludes, Schuhbeck won’t be required to surrender to prison for any further sentencing." This information was first reported by the "Bild" newspaper. Schuhbeck's legal representation has yet to respond to a query from the DPA news agency.
Schuhbeck Prepares for Another Showdown in Court
Schuhbeck's time in prison has been delayed due to health concerns, with the suspension lasting until Pentecost Sunday, as the spokesperson clarified. The review will decide his fate moving forward.
In October 2022, Schuhbeck was convicted by the Munich I Regional Court. The judges were convinced that he had evaded 2.3 million euros in taxes and dipped his hands in the cookie jar of two of his restaurants more than a thousand times, effectively hiding money. He confessed to using a custom-made computer program developed by one of his employees for this purpose.
The Munich I Public Prosecutor's Office is preparing to bring Schuhbeck to trial once again later this month. They allege Schuhbeck of fraud, among other charges. Four trial days have been scheduled to commence from June 24, and a verdict could be reached as early as July 14.
