"Frustrated" Rory McIlroy Advocates for More Composite Thinking Following Sluggish Play Warnings During The Irish Open

Rory McIlroy, the Masters champion and world number two, felt agitated during the Amgen Irish Open. The Northern Irish golfer, who finished with a first-round score of 71, voiced his concerns about the handling of slow play by DP World Tour officials.

McIlroy's group, which included Thriston Lawrence and Kristoffer Reitan, who scored 81 and 77 respectively, was put on the clock twice during the tournament. The large home crowd following him and the added attention on his group, McIlroy believes, should have warranted some leeway.

"More common sense should have been used," McIlroy stated after his round. He expressed frustration about losing ground due to waiting on crowds and camera crews during his last few holes. McIlroy let the slow play warnings agitate him because of past experiences in large groups.

McIlroy feels there is more going on with his group compared to other groups on the course. He believes the circumstances of his relatively rare European appearances add to his frustration. "I have more to deal with, including more broadcast crew, media, and fans," he said.

The DP World Tour official who penalized McIlroy for slow play at the Amgen Irish Open 2025 has not been named in the available sources; the decision was made during the event. McIlroy admitted feeling rushed for the last 12 holes of his round.

Despite the setbacks, McIlroy remains optimistic about his chances in the tournament. "I'm looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow," he said. With his talent and determination, McIlroy is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the remaining rounds of the Amgen Irish Open.
