People Walk on Frozen Baltic Sea - Police Warn - Frozen Baltic Sea near Rügen lures visitors into deadly ice traps

The Baltic Sea off Rügen has frozen into a striking winter landscape, drawing visitors onto the ice. Despite its beauty, authorities warn that the frozen surface is highly unstable. Emergency services face extreme risks when rescuing those who ignore the dangers.

Prorer Wiek bay near Sassnitz remains covered in thick ice, stretching far out to sea. Even the anchored oil tanker Eventin sits surrounded by frozen water. Yet the seemingly solid sheets lack the strength to support weight, creating a deadly risk of falling through.

The harbour in Sassnitz and nearby shipping channels are among the most hazardous areas. Ice formations around the eastern breakwater and lighthouse have also pulled in crowds, despite repeated warnings. The water police stress that saltwater, wind, and waves prevent the ice from thickening safely.

Many have ventured far beyond the shoreline, tempted by the frozen scenery. Rescue teams highlight the extreme difficulty of operations in such conditions, where responders themselves face grave danger.

Authorities continue to urge people to stay off the ice entirely. The deceptive appearance of stability hides a real threat of fatal accidents. Without proper thickness, any step onto the frozen Baltic could prove deadly.
