On Friday, 17.10., the Kulturbar froelich & herrlich in the West Wing, Leipzig, will host an intriguing event near me as part of the "LOKAL DEKOLONIAL" series in Leipzig and Heidelberg. This evening gathering, moderated by Hanna Harp, will feature poet Volha Hapeyeva, performer Igor Shugaleev, and producer Marina Dashuk, promising a captivating exploration of Belarusian culture and identity.

Belarus, a country often seen as a buffer zone historically, is a subject of ongoing debates regarding its position in Europe. Its national identity, shaped by its in-between and non-binary aspect, will be the focus of this event. The Belarusian word "kraj," meaning "edge," "land," or "homeland," encapsulates this unique identity beautifully.

The event will be conducted in English, German, and Belarusian languages, with whispered interpretation into German provided during the event. Registration is required and can be done through the calendar entry. The venue is wheelchair accessible, ensuring an inclusive experience for all.

This cultural event is a cooperation between the Referat Internationale Zusammenarbeit of the city of Leipzig, the Federal Agency for Civic Education, and Mosaik Deutschland e.V. Heidelberg. It's an exciting opportunity to delve deeper into Belarus' complex relationship with European political entities.

Historically, Belarus joined the Eastern Partnership program around 2009, aiming for rapprochement with the EU. However, relations deteriorated substantially after the contested 2010 presidential election and subsequent repression of opposition, leading to EU sanctions and political isolation. Belarus is also closely aligned with Russia, being part of the Eurasian Economic Union since 2015, and frequently participating in joint military maneuvers with Russia.

In addition to this main event, there are other "LOKAL DEKOLONIAL" events at Politik im Freien Theater. These include "LOKAL DEKOLONIAL: Framings, Namings, Solidarities - Bubbles between PostOst, Diaspora and Exile" and "LOKAL DEKOLONIAL: Pluralism in Exile - Between Tension and Solidarity."

Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage with Belarusian culture and gain insights into its complex relationship with Europe. The event near me will take place from 19.30 to 22.30. We look forward to seeing you there!
